The art theme for Burning Japan 2025 is decided!
Here are the proposer’s rough image and the background story.

Theme title
“Ukiyo – The Floating World”
Simple and easy to remember, it expresses something of Japan and the heart of the theme.
Background story — “The spirit of the Floating World, fleeting and beautiful”
What is Ukiyo?
“Ukiyo” means “the world that floats on.” It is a word for the fragility and passing nature of life, and for the idea of “enjoying this moment.”
It originally came from Buddhist thought, and was used to mean “this fleeting world, full of suffering.”
In the Edo period (1603–1868), though, as city culture grew, it shifted toward a positive reading: “because it is fleeting, celebrate the pleasure in front of you.”
Tied to the entertainment culture of the pleasure quarters, playhouses, and teahouses — ukiyo-e, kabuki, and more — a distinct worldview took shape, one in which fragility and pleasure, and impermanence and beauty, live side by side.

Burning Japan and Ukiyo
Sharing fragility and beauty
The installations at Burning Japan, and the event itself, appear for a time and then are gone.
This feeling of “enjoying a moment of brilliance” connects with the fragility and beauty of Ukiyo. Finding value in what is fleeting, and enjoying that moment — that spirit is the worldview of Ukiyo itself.
A “world that floats on,” enjoyed together
Ukiyo in the Edo period was not mere pleasure-seeking. It was also a place where people shared joy.
In the same way, Burning Japan is a place where participants enjoy themselves together, and connect, through art, music, and conversation.
This feeling of “sharing a moment’s pleasure with someone” may be the shape of Ukiyo today.
The symbolism of fire and the Floating World
The Floating World is a concept that stands for impermanence, and fire also stands for fragility and beauty. The Burn at the center of Burning Japan is like the Floating World: it changes shape in an instant, and still leaves a strong impression on people.
A world where tradition and the present cross
Ukiyo-e was the pop culture of the Edo period, and it still influences creators today.
The worldview this theme creates should become a bridge between tradition and the present, and a spark for new expression.
We hope that bringing Ukiyo into Burning Japan gives rise to a new fusion of art and culture.
