Japan's official Burning Man regional event
Welcome to Burning Japan
An audacious community builds a city on open ground, fills it with art and gifts, burns a phoenix on the last night, and leaves the land as we found it. See you 7–11 October 2027.
Most Recent Burn
Night Parade of a Thousand Demons
Burning Japan 2026 ran 8–12 October at Tsumagoi Bokujo. Our 13th burn took its theme from the Night Parade of a Thousand Demons, and around 750 people built the city together.
Hyakki Yagyo, the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons, is the old story of yokai, spirits, demons, and tsukumogami, household objects that come alive after long use, marching through the streets on certain nights. People stayed inside, because to see the parade was said to bring death or a curse. Painters have returned to it since the Muromachi period, most famously in the Hyakki Yagyo Emaki scrolls, and Burning Japan 2026 pushed the hundred to a thousand, Senki Yagyo.

The Principles of Burning Japan
All 10 Principles02Gifting
A cold drink when the sun goes down, help pitching a tent, a song you start together.
A gift is something the other person wants.
- 01Radical InclusionAnyone can be part of Burning Japan. We welcome the stranger.
- 03DecommodificationEverything here is a gift. No sponsors, no ads, just what people bring.
- 04Radical Self-relianceCome prepared, and you'll have something to share.
- 05Radical Self-expressionWhat you actually want to make, held next to everyone else's freedom.
- 06Communal EffortThe things you cannot try alone, you try with the person next to you.
- 07Civic ResponsibilityJapanese law applies here too, and looking after each other is what lets the burn come back each year.
- 08Leaving No TraceWe build a city from nothing and hand the land back as we found it.
- 09ParticipationThere's no audience here. Everyone helps make the city.
- 10ImmediacyPut the phone away and be here, now.
